As a child, Terry, the “B” of B&D, happily read and collected comics. While she started with the Disney Ducks, when she purchased her first super-hero comic, an eighty-page Giant #8, the Ducks hit the trash can (something she regretted later on). Suddenly collecting, reading, and dreaming comics became a passion. However, by thirteen years old, when non-comic activities seemed more appealing for the age, Terry packed up her heroes and forgot them. It wasn’t until she married and moved from her mother’s house that the box resurfaced in her life. Memories of joy in seeing the books again reawakened her long forgotten hobby, and there was no way she would dump the six hundred plus comics for other interests this time around.

The “D” of B&D, Phil’s story also began with the wonder of childhood, but he treated his collection of comics seriously from the start. He went so far as to fill an old freezer with them which sat on his mother’s back porch. Considering the conditions, the air and water tight protection of a freezer seemed optimal to Phil. He valued his comic collection so much that once, after a lot of convincing from his mother, he begrudgingly gave a ten cent comic to a sick cousin. The sting wore on until he finally replaced the issue many years later at one hundred times the cost. Comics never left Phil as he collected avidly into adulthood and through college.

In the search to fill in his collection, Phil ran an ad in the newspaper for old comics. Terry, just wanting to talk comics, answered the ad and met Phil for the first time. Their friendship evolved quickly through their love of comics, and by 1979 they talked comics at shows and traveled to conventions to immerse themselves in the excitement. The two enjoyed the hobby so much, they were hitting one show a month within the tri-state area.

By late 1980, they posted a sign-up sheet at Roanoke’s local show, RoVaCon, to attract others interested in hunting down new comics. Like many collectors, finding comics at a 7-11 or Kroger meant sometimes missing an issue, so Phil and Terry set high standards; the comics needed to be in great condition and no one should miss an issue. With interested customers, B&D Buyer Service formed out of their houses.

In July of 1982, and with enough customers in need of great comics, they opened a storefront on Williamson Road. Their passions, with Phil as the front man and Terry working behind the scenes, would suddenly pay their bills. The shop thrived for ten years. New customers came in the doors with enough regularity that they relocated to the log cabin on Elm Avenue in March of 1992. Phil and Terry’s friendship continued on through their love of comics and feeding customer’s hobbies even after he left the partnership in 1994. As B&D Comic Shop continued to grow, the name and goal of undamaged, new comics for customers never changed. Although Phil passed away in May of 2011, Terry continues the passion they shared and spreads it to new and existing customers with each ding of the opening door.
